Elk River Wrestling Secures Consolation Championship 

Section 5AAA Champion Elk River High School staved off a 17-point rally in its fifth-place dual versus Apple Valley to secure the State AAA Consolation Championship, the school’s highest finish in more than a decade. 

The Elks dropped its quarterfinal match to Hastings in heartbreaking fashion, losing four of the last five matches - with the Raiders grabbing bonus points in all three. 

But Elk River - who won 16 of 18 duals in the regular season after losing three to open the season - rebounded with a strong win over Section 8AAA champion Brainerd, 37-26. Jacob Hartl, a freshman, kicked things off with bonus points in a major decision, while Ian Lessard, Brayden Hawes and Walker Gaulrapp all scored technical falls in their matches. Brainerd won four of five matches after Finley Hilyar’s major decision staked the Elks to a nice lead, but Elk senior Will Johnson stopped the streak with a fall at 285 to assure ERHS of a spot in the fifth place dual. 

On Thursday night, ERHS again used a nice run in the heart of the order with Hawes, Gaulrapp, Mason Freeman and Hilyar each earning wins. Though Apple Valley stormed back, it was Johnson, with a win by fall in the final minutes, who secured the consolation championship for the Elks.
